Rob Lewis - Glass Artist
Location: Flagstaff, Arizona
"Hello! My name is Rob, and I am a local Flagstaff glass artist. I got my start in the Pacific Northwest, making glass in Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett. I learned this trade by working in production style studios making ornaments, votives, paperweights, large installations, and sculptures. However, I specialize in making vessels with a color application called Murrine.
The process is similar to making hard candy. Colors are layered over one another in different patterns and variations, and then are pulled out into a long strand. After that, the strand is chopped vertically to show a cross section of the design. I enjoy this style because the array of colors that can be combined is endless and can be indicative of my current moods or seasons of the year. The ambiguity and sometimes unpredictable nature of this process reminds me of the human experience.
My glass is food safe and meant for room-temperature/cool liquids. It should not be used for hot liquids or put in the microwave, and I recommend handwashing them."
