Elaine Dillingham - Painter
Location: Flagstaff, AZ
“Creating a still life is like arranging two people on a stage (you sit here, no, to the left – and you stand here…) and then eavesdropping on their conversation.” – EC Dillingham
Elaine C. Dillingham is a visual artist and art educator living and working in Flagstaff, Arizona. Her work has been described as playful, meticulous, more-than-meets-the-eye, strange, and sometimes even beautiful. But she invites you to look and decide for yourself.
Her process begins with quiet, focused observation of her favorite subjects – the forest at the base of Mt. Elden, where she hikes with her dog, and the still life – visually searching for their “lovely idiosyncrasies.” She draws and paints from life, then interprets. “I like to glide on the edge of abstraction. Acrylic, watercolor, ink – I love them all.”
An adjunct instructor for Coconino Community College, Elaine taught drawing and painting classes in the Art Department for 20 years. She is a founding member of the Artists’ Coalition of Flagstaff and a juried member of the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society. A graduate of Macalester College with degrees in art and English, she has lived in Flagstaff with her family since 1989.
