Darren Seweyestewa - Hopi Jeweler
Location: Flagstaff, Arizona
Darren Seweyestewa has been handcrafting metal for over 30 years and has become a highly respected Hopi silversmith. He is proudly continuing the tradition of his tribe's overlay technique. In this style of metalwork, a design is hand-pierced into a layer of silver, which is then soldered flat onto another layer of silver beneath it. The metal showing through the design is textured and oxidized to bring out the crisp lines of the piercings - creating a striking piece of wearable art. Each piece requires precision and high attention to detail.
Darren uses traditional Hopi symbols in his work, such as water, cloud, feathers, and animal designs. He currently resides in Flagstaff, Arizona. His work can be found at galleries throughout the southwest and is in collections around the world.
